The 5 Keys to Masterful Closet Organization
The average US home contains a total of 300,000 items. And, if you're anything like us, around half of those items are stuffed into your closet!
But, overfull and untidy closets make life more difficult than it needs to be. Most mornings you're searching through the closet to find the clothes you want to wear. Or, you pull out the same old clothes just because they're easier to access.
We know that closet organization isn't exactly a fun way to spend an afternoon. We think it is a great idea to hire some help from a home manager or personal concierge but if you follow our few easy steps you can definitely be on the road to a more organized closet on your own. Whether you hire an assistant to help or do it yourself once you have everything neatly stored and lined up, you'll feel such a sense of achievement that tackling other items on your to-do list will be a breeze!
Follow these top tips to achieve masterful closet organization.
1. Sort and Purge
First you need to do a sort and a purge. Go through your closet and decide what items you love and will wear again and which items just need to go. You can donate, recycle or sell any of your unwanted items. After deciding what clothes you'll keep and what you'll sell or donate, you need to decide how to organize your closet.
2. Have a Hanging Strategy
Make the most of the space you have by hanging shorter items such as skirts and tops above shelving. Save the more spacious part of your wardrobe for hanging pants and long dresses.
You can group clothes into colors or occasions. This can make it easier to find what you need when you're in a hurry or need to pack for an upcoming trip.
If you're short on space, multi-hangers are a must for your pants. Instead of just one bar they come with five or six, so you can hang several pairs of pants on the same hanger.
3. Stack Decorative Boxes
Not only do decorative boxes keep your stuff out of sight, but you can also stack them up to maximize shelving space even more. They're also attractive and come in lots of different designs and colors to suit your taste.
Boxes are great for storing accessories such as bikinis, handbags and hats - especially if you don't have many drawers in your bedroom. Another great tip is to store handbags inside each other. This will save space and keeps them from getting bent out of shape.
4. Make the Most of Wasted Space
The key to an organized closet is making effective use of all space. Instead of wasting valuable rod space on scarves and belts, follow this tip. Attach a towel rail to an area of unused space, such as on the inside of your closet door. Then, create an original display for your accessories by hanging and draping them over the rail.
5. Divide and Conquer
Shelf dividers are a great way to organize closet space devoted to stacked items like sweaters. Not only do dividers help to keep the stacks separate, but they also offer support, preventing your neatly stacked sweaters from toppling over.
